Taqueria La Paz

20130506_134734

Anyone that know’s me knows that I love authentic Mexican food! Nothing against Chipotle but it’s not my first choice when I have a craving for food with a Latin flare!  Taqueria La Paz located at 5134 West Grand Ave in Chicago is my new favorite. First and foremost there is history there for me. I attended Charles Allen Prosser in Chicago and it was one of the spots that my friends and I frequented when we had open campus. The prices are just right ! You can get an entire dinner for under 7 bucks! I had a burrito dinner complete with rice beans chips and salsa. The portions were filling, the service was great and the atmosphere was welcoming. One thingI like I about this place is that it’s a small business. I personally believe all of the big names get enough of our business we need to put money into the hands of our moms and pops businesses. If you are ever on the west side and you want some authentic Mexican food be sure you stop in and tell them MR. OPENYONATED said it’s a great place to eat!

Give of yourself!

IMG_0031-1

As a life coach one of my goals is to not only guide people into meeting their potential but also to strive to meet my own potential. I think one of the best things any individual can do is give part of themselves to someone else. Time is one of our most valuable assets and what we do with it speaks volumes of the type of people we are. I got an opportunity to attend a seed packing event at Willow Chicago due to an invite from my friend Darren Calhoun owner of Quick Click Media. It was an awesome 2 hour event where various seeds were sorted and packed to go to families in El Salvador. It was a chance for me to forget about other things that I could have been doing and give time to an effort that was about helping others. I really enjoyed the event and am glad that I was invited out. There are plenty of opportunities where you can volunteer some of your time. Soup kitchens, clothing give aways, homeless shelters, night ministries are all opportunities that you can give your time to. My coaching tip is to forget about what you have to do for a little while and give of yourself!

“The Padded Room Presents” Prince vs Michael Jackson

Sankofa Soul Restoration (1)

The Dynamic Duo is the best word that I can use to describe the BoBo’s. I had the pleasure of attending The “Padded Room Presents” Prince vs. Michael Jackson on Sunday April 28th and it was awesome.  My goal of attending a few poetry sets during April national poetry month is fulfilled. This was a great event to end my month out. Darnell and Robin have a wonderful chemistry and they compliment each other in every way. They are powerful in their delivery of spoken word, they are funny and energetic. When I see them on the poetry scene I always say to myself they truly belong together. At this event they brought together a powerful cast of Chicago talent to entertain, enlighten and inspire those that attended.  I love the variety that they bring to the scene and look forward to more from them.   The stay in tune with their events like their page on Facebook and add them individually as well.  https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Padded-RoOm/129470793835393?fref=ts

Go Get Your Soul Restored!

National poetry month is in full swing!  This evenings stop was Soul Restoration hosted by Deana Dean and Celeste featuring guest host  Durel Sankofa.  When you go a Soul Restoration set it’s just like visiting family. The love that’s in the room is evident by the smiles, hugs and positive energy that go from person to person. Soul Restoration is featuring guest hosts which support the fact that they are about sharing their love for fellow poets.  The best term that I can use to describe tonight was lyrical dynamite.  Sankofa brought his suave tone to the set delivering his signature style  which makes him so popular among his peers. Young poets were in the house and they flipped rhyme and verses back and forth like a baton in a relay race. Many Chicago poets were in the house to lay landmines in the form of poems  and honestly tonight’s show cannot be contained in words. When you visit a Soul Restoration Set you will notice that they always take the opportunity to show fellow poets love whether it’s in the form of plugging projects they’re working on or plugging different events going on in the city.  This is a set that is all about community.  Deana and Celeste host this set every Thursday at Soul Vegetarian 205 East 75th Street at 7pm. Add them on Facebook and like their fan page to stay in tune with the shows and by all means stop by!

“SNAP SHOTS” WITH TIM’M WEST

Snapshots (12)

There is more to hip hop than a banging beat! Hip Hop is a culture, a way of life, the soundtrack for a generation.  We live in an age  where many have forgotten that music is suppose to uplift, empower, entertain  and educate.  Tim’m’s Snapshots does all of that for me. I’ve missed the age of hip hop where stories were told. Snapshots takes me back to the golden era of hip hop where I actually got something from a rap album. Tim’m West is not just an artist he is an activist, advocate, educator,  friend and ally to many in and outside of the LGBT community.  I’ve had the chance to see him working with youth at the Center on Halsted and more recently perform at a CD launch event. As an artist he is humble, talented, and engaging.  He is not one of those artist who thinks the world revolves around him, he is more than open to share the stage as he exhibited by sharing the stage with a young man that he has worked with. If you are looking for some good music and good people Tim’m West is your man. Snap Shots gives us a look into the life of Tim’m but he is  involved in many endeavors. Make sure you support his latest project and  check out some of his other work at the links listed below.

The Pansophy Patio with Niki Gee

Pansophy Patio (5)

What does one do on a rainy Chicago night? The possibilities were endless, I could have done my regular pop in a dvd routine or visit the various blogs that I get celebrity news from. On this night in particular I decided to go and support Niki Gee at the first edition of The Pansophy Patio.  If you will close your eyes and imagine yourself in a nice little club in New York with just the right lighting,  smooth music in the background and a mixture of creative people this would be the perfect description of my evening. There was a roster of talented poets, nice libations, and a beautiful backdrop that kind of reminded me of a scene in Harlem Nights. To top the evening off was the enchanting Niki Gee host  of the Pansophy Project.  Niki is a very talented hostess and poet who makes everyone feel welcome.  We were treated to poetry and a skit which I loved because it allowed the audience to be part of the magic of the evening. If you are looking for a feel good type of place  where you can marinate in a poetic pool look no further than the Pansophy Patio. You can also find Niki hosting her segment on Windycityunderground.com every Monday 11 am to 2pm cst.

Let’s get poetic.

Cypher Row (2)1

April is National Poetry month and my goal has been to make sure that I take in some of Chicago’s poetry scene.  The first set that I hit up this month is Row Cypher Inc. hosted by Ted Weissberg and his founding partner. It was a rainy night which could have been a key factor in keeping me in but I am glad that I didn’t!  The roster was power packed not only with poets but musicians which added more flavor to the event.  The atmosphere was inviting and reminded me of old school hip hop, the energy was high and the hosts were great. Row Cypher seems like it would be a set that even the novice would feel welcome at.  There were refreshments, merchandise and friendly people which is important for someone that is not really familiar with the scene.  The show closed out with an ACTION packed  hip hop performance that had the crowd live and interactive. This was definitely a good way to get poetry month started out.  Check their site out as well as their Facebook Page.   http://www.rowcypher.com/       https://www.facebook.com/RowCypherInc?fref=ts

Sol Music

Sol collective1

Tonight I had a craving for some food for my soul. Aniba Hotep & The Sol Collective was the answer to my hunger.

This AMAZING act does what very few artists today do, they make you feel their music. We live in a time of musical fads and one hit wonders so it is very important that you make sure that you are consuming quality music.  They truly deliver the entire package whenever they perform. Their stage presence is awesome ,their attire mixes glamour infused with earth. The vocals are tremendous and their hearts show through as they engage with their audience. The band with its amazing players hit every chakra in your body!  Make sure that you experience them as soon as possible!!!!! That’s my 2 cents!  Like their fan page on Facebook  and follow them on Twitter to stay in step with the moves they are making.
