Love Dia Coture and Fashion and New Negro Media present:Amalgamation 2013
On Sat Oct 19th I had the privilege to attend DW Norwood’s Amalgamation 2013. I like fashion but if you see me I’m normally in comfy clothes LOL. It was a chilly fall night but that didn’t stop people from coming out to support the event. I liked that the show had a lot of variety. When most people think of fashion shows they think stick models and chiseled bodies, not that some of that wasn’t there but it wasn’t overt. I think people who attended the event would say that anyone has potential to work the runway with the right attitude. DW Norwood can remember being interested in fashion and design as early as kindergarten. She currently does custom work for men and women and describes her style as sexy, unexpected and a little quirky. I had the opportunity to talk to her her career in the fashion industry.
DW Norwood on challenges in fashion in Chicago: “It can tend to be cliquish, it’s not necessarily talent that gains you success, it’s whether or not the right people like you and your circle.” “There are too many folks in high places with no knowledge, education or credentials.”
DW Norwood on her decision to infuse her show with local musicians especially in hip hop: “It made sense, we provide this platform for new and independent designers, models, media, why not musicians.”
DW Norwood on her fashion inspirations: “My grandmother has been inspirational to me in regards to pursuing fashion.” “Inspiration for individual collections may come from an array of places. ” I’ve created collections around food, music, movies and personalities in my circle of friends.” Some of her other inspirations are John Galliano and Coco Chanel.
I really enjoyed her show, it was well put together and I like the fact that she is open to working with other designers and local musicians. If Chicago is ever going to get to the place where they are known for music and fashion our local artists are definitely going to have to stick together. Aunt Jackie’s
Last year after about 9 years I decided to cut my locs. One reason I cut them off was because so many people started wearing the style. It didn’t seem like a style that added to my individuality. Of course there are those that told me yours looked different and you should not let the fact that locs have turned into a fad change your purpose for wearing them. The other reason that I cut them was because I wanted a to be able to experiment a little more before mother nature sets in and starts to take my hair! LOL I haven’t wore an afro in years so of course I had to relearn what works and does not work so I once again began experimenting with different products. The key to wearing your hair in it’s natural state is finding the right product that will enhance what God has given you. While walking through Deals retail store. I saw a product called Aunt Jackie’s. There are tons of natural products and all of them don’t work for everyone but that day I thought I would give it a try and my fro has never been the same. The products I chose were: Knot on my watch instant detangling therapy, Oh So Clean moisturizing Shampoo, In Control Moisturizing & Softening Conditioner and Curl la la Defining Curling Custard. My favorite products of the four are the Knot on my watch instant detangling therapy and the Curl la la. Before using the products taming my fro was a task but since I’ve incorporated them into my routine it’s softer and easier to work with. It was $5 for each product but I’m sure in a beauty supply or retail store it will cost a bit more. It is truly one of Mr. Openyonated’s picks and that’s my 2cents!
The Return of the Padded Room
Picking right back up where they left off The Padded Room has returned! The Dynamic Duo husband and wife team the BoBo’s host their poetry set the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month at Say Ashe boutique and style bar located at 456 East 75th Street. It was a rainy evening but that didn’t stop poetry lovers for coming out and supporting. It was an evening filled with great poetry, tasty finger food, and commentary. I always enjoy these two hosting together. They were definitely made for each other and always give their all at their sets. Make sure you support the Padded Room.

Withdrawals and Deposits
What happens when you constantly make withdrawals and never make deposits into your bank account; your account becomes empty and is eventually closed. That’s what I noticed was happening to myself today until I entered the company of people who make deposits into my spirit. If people tell you that you are looking tired that is one of the signs that too many withdrawals are being made. Don’t let your account get too low because you won’t be able to operate at your full capacity.
